This shield of Arms, incorporating the Ragged Cross of Nottingham and Aquarius the zodiacal water-carrier, appears above a window of the former offices of the Nottingham Waterworks Company, together with their motto “Pure and Constant”. Thomas Hawksley was Engineer to the Nottingham Waterworks Company, from its inception in 1830 (as the Nottingham Trent Waterworks Company) until it was taken over by the Corporation in 1880.
“PURE AND CONSTANT”
seems a fitting motto not only for the company, but for the man who, from his beginnings in Nottingham went on to do more than any other engineer to provide the Constant Service of Pure Water piped into every home that the civilised world now takes for granted.
